Shade Tree Potter, Turns Over a New Leaf

Nature's astonishing resiliency

surprised me again this week

as the soaking rains revived so many plants

drained of life from the long months of drought.

The bright pink Oxalis have pushed through the once baked soil.

The yarrow, flattened on the rocks, brown and dry,

now springs to life, fully green, feathery and upright,

restored from recent rains.

I see many live oaks with dried, brown leaves,

sadly standing with their roots stranded

in a parched pocket of earth.

The rains came too late for some.

Today I will gather yarrow leaves

and smell the pungent fragrance

as I press their lacy outlines

into the moist clay slabs,

capturing

the astonishing resiliency of nature

in a vessel I can share with you.

Hope the coming autumn revives your senses, Susie Fowler, the Shade Tree POTTER
